1st Place: Nandika Vinod
Piece Title: Who Are You?
Nandika is a rising sophomore in high school. She enjoys spending her time doing graphic design, singing, and learning about the brain. Her submission's overall theme is how challenges shape who we are. She based it off of her own experiences as a singer with stages and how those memories shape you to become a courageous person.
Personal Statement
What motivates me to study neuroscience isn’t just the depth and complexity the field has to offer but also the impact it has on others. We only have one brain, so being able to study it can help so many people maintain their brain health. I also love taking creative approaches to neuroscience using my love for graphic design and music!
2ND Place: Indre Luksys
Piece Title: Memory Development On An Identity Scope
Indre is a high school junior from the Chicago suburbs. She is studious, reserved, introspective, and goal driven. In her free time, she enjoys watching study blogs on YouTube or creating new Spotify playlists. She also loves visiting new cafes where she can find sweets like cinnamon rolls or coffee. Indre also enjoys her study sessions by making dashboards and having a cup of tea.
Personal Statement
Neuroscience fascinates me because it is linked to psychology and addresses the biology of why we may act the way we do. In a generation where teen mental health has become overlooked, I aspire to educate myself about concepts that influence the well-being of my generation.
3RD Place: Avril Shakira Villar
Piece Title: Memory Makes Us
Avril Shakira Villar is a writer from the Philippines. She is the author of I Live Because I Almost Died and an alumna of WriteGirl LA. She is the winner of the One Room One Hour Essay Competition by Jack Wieland, the First Place winner in the English category of the 7th Heritage Youth Writing Contest, and one of the finalists in the English Poetry category of the 2025 Maningning Miclat Art Foundation competition.
Personal Statement
Literature and neuroscience approach memory through different methods, but they ask similar questions about identity, perception, and continuity. One investigates neurons, the other narrative; both are concerned with how experience becomes something a person carries. I write because I am interested in that transformation. The possibility that a remembered event is continually reconstructed makes memory less a storage system than an ongoing act of interpretation.
